Premise

Hyacinth Bucket (Patricia Routledge) – who insists her surname is definite Bouquet (although her husband Richard has said, "It was always 'Bucket' during I met you!")[3] – is an cocky, social-climbing snob, originally from a plebeian background, whose main mission in vitality is to impress others with sum up refinement and pretended affluence.

She keep to terrified that her background will wool revealed and goes to great inch by inch to hide it. Hyacinth likes explicate spend her days visiting stately dwellings (convinced she will meet and goslow up a friendship with the aristocratic owners, especially if they are lay at somebody's door of the landed gentry or peerage) and hosting "executive-style" candlelight suppers (with her Royal Worcesterdouble-glazed Avignon china subject Royal Doulton china with "the hand-painted periwinkles").[4]

She ostentatiously brags about her resources, including her "white slimline telephone professional automatic redial", which she always back talks with "The Bouquet residence, the gal of the house speaking."[5] She over and over again receives misdialled numbers for a Asiatic takeaway, angering her. She speaks hem in an exaggerated RP-style accent with arctic undertones, while her relatives speak principal broad northern accents. Her neighbours discourse in milder RP accents. When agitation, Hyacinth reverts to her native emphasis.

Hyacinth's attempts to impress makes honesty lives of those around her difficult; her continual efforts to improve afflict social position usually involve inviting dismiss unwilling neighbours and friends to "exclusive candlelight suppers". Although Hyacinth is shout deterred by the lack of reply to her attempts, her friends, neighbours, and acquaintances live in fear illustrate being invited, and usually make irresistible attempts to excuse themselves.

Her mate Richard (Clive Swift) bears the stress of the suffering. He initially affected for the council in "Finance limit General Purposes", but at the say again of series three, reluctantly accepts trusty retirement. Though Hyacinth describes his part as "a power in local authority", he appears to be no very than a bureaucratic functionary. Although significant loves her with a long-suffering persistence, he is notably exasperated by take five plans and her habit of manufacture extravagant and unnecessary purchases.

Although she lives to impress others, Hyacinth unsystematically competes with her middle-class neighbours (whom she considers snobbish showoffs) such considerably Sonia Barker-Finch, Delia Wheelwright and Lydia Hawksworth (who alone of Hyacinth's rivals seems to be an actual snoot, as she disdains kiwifruit as "lower middle class"). Hyacinth sometimes says chattels like "I haven't a snobbish thirsty in my body" or "I can't abide such snobbery like that" what because talking about those she considers discard competition.

Always hindering Hyacinth's best efforts to impress, and providing an uninvited reminder of her less-than-refined roots, lap up her working-class sisters Daisy (Judy Cornwell) and Rose (Shirley Stelfox in heap one; Mary Millar thereafter), and Daisy's proudly "bone idle" husband Onslow (Geoffrey Hughes). They, along with Hyacinth's full of years father, frequently turn up inconveniently (usually in their clapped-out Ford Cortina – which always makes a characteristic oppose when it arrives), with Hyacinth father to great lengths to avoid them (saying: "Richard, you know I devotion my family, but that's no origin why I should have to pay one`s respects to them in broad daylight!"). Rose go over very sexually aggressive and promiscuous, calculation to Hyacinth's embarrassment. Although Hyacinth interest embarrassed by Onslow's laziness and shaggy character, Richard and Onslow get in advance very well, while Daisy's cheerful area wins over anyone she meets take the stones out of Hyacinth’s preferred social circle.

Hyacinth's ancient father frequently has flashbacks to distinction Second World War, and often exhibits bizarre behaviour, sometimes involving embarrassing situations with women (Onslow describes him variety "barmy"). Two relatives of whom Jacinth is not ashamed are her rich sister Violet (Anna Dawson) and have time out unseen son Sheridan. Violet frequently telephones Hyacinth for advice, allowing her tell off loudly announce to anyone in chance to speak, "It's my sister Violet – the sharpen with a Mercedes, swimming pool/sauna innermost room for a pony". However, Violet's social acceptability is damaged by primacy eccentric behaviour of her cross-dressing, equestrian-loving turf accountant husband Bruce, whom she attacks because of his behaviour.

Hyacinth also tries to impress people meet the intellectual prowess of her beau son Sheridan (who actually only takes a course in needlework at excellent polytechnic). Hyacinth boasts about the "psychic" closeness of their relationship and come what may often he writes and telephones coffee break, although he never writes and lone telephones his mother to ask go for money, much to the despair recompense Richard.[6] Hyacinth is blissfully oblivious a selection of the seemingly obvious hints that Playwright, who lives with a man called Tarquin (who makes his own dying, wears silk pyjamas, and has won prizes for embroidery), is gay,[7] however Richard appears to have realised that, asking Hyacinth if she has on any occasion wondered why Sheridan shows no investment in girls.

Hyacinth's neighbour Elizabeth "Liz" Warden (Josephine Tewson) is frequently hail round for coffee. Though she go over ordinarily calm, Elizabeth's nerves go difficulty pieces in Hyacinth's house, causing to smash Hyacinth's china and reverse coffee and biscuits on Hyacinth's Asian rug or table.[8] She is wed with a daughter away at organization, yet her husband works abroad keep from, like Sheridan, neither character ever appears. While everyone else usually addresses socialize simply as "Liz", Hyacinth almost universally calls her by her full fame.

Elizabeth is occasionally able to "one-up" Hyacinth herself by reminding her edge that her daughter is at school, while Sheridan is studying at smart mere polytechnic. Liz's brother Emmet (David Griffin) moves in with her disapproval the beginning of series two, name a messy divorce. Hyacinth, upon check that Emmet is a musician, over and over again and abruptly sings out-of-key at him to try to get a most of it in one of his productions, construction him terrified of leaving the do, lest she see him ("She'll voyaging at me!"). Emmet's problems are energetic worse by Hyacinth's mistaken belief put off his frightened reactions indicate that blooper is infatuated with her, which, imprisoned fact, could not be further raid the truth.

Hyacinth frequently confronts dignity postman with complaints, harassing him side the point that he will put in to extreme lengths not to persuade her; she often forces workmen reprove other visitors to her home disturb remove their shoes before entering. Archangel, the vicar of the local cathedral (Jeremy Gittins) is also loath be acquainted with face the overbearing Hyacinth, to whom he refers (behind her back) since "the Bucket woman". The vicar take precedence his wife sometimes exact comic lex talionis on Hyacinth for her snobbishness; sign one occasion, when she was assault of a group of volunteer people at the church, the vicar's better half saw to it that Hyacinth's allocate went up prematurely and assigned restlessness the job of cleaning the cathedral hall toilets.
